“Granada Television’s ‘Celebration: Madchester – The Sound of the North’

At the height of the so-called ‘Madchester’ scene or ‘baggy’ if you will, this captured everything in all its glory. For a start Northside featured in a major item. Footage shows the band in interview, rehearsal, live in concert and even at work (well, the one band member who worked); Central Station Design in their studio creating something out of a pane of glass and loads of ephemera; Happy Mondays in Amsterdam – including Derek Ryder soundchecking for his son!; also includes 808 State and MC Tunes; Celebration was a Granada Television arts strand and undoubtedly Anthony H Wilson (So It Goes, The Other Side of Midnight, Remote Control, Content) must have had some influence in the making of a programme featuring Northside from his own record label.”

This is a live recording of Daft Punk at “We are Family” – a rave in Chicago that I and many of my STILL good friends attended in the spring of 1997 (editor’s note: the mix says February 11 but the flyer says April 11 1997 so I changed the date in title bar). I remember this party as being one of the best I had ever been to in Chicago. All the buzz was on the two french producers who had just released their definitive albumHomework earlier in the year and were in Chicago bringing their new brand of french-wave house to the city that started it all.

Daft Punk spun an amazing set that night at the Route 66 roller rink on 63rd and Cottage Grove in Chicago’s still gritty southside, along with Paul Johnson, Justin Long and Hyperactive. I remember the night as though it were yesterday although it has already been 12 years past!

The mix really captures what house music in Chicago sounded like in the late 90’s – no doubt influenced by what was coming out of of France at the time ( as shown with the many tracks played here from Guy-Manuel’s independent Crydamore records and Bengalter’s own Roulé label).

The mix starts out with Teachers from Homework and goes on from there. I hope you enjoy it and it brings back as many memories for you as it did for me.

5. Wu-Tang: Drinking Shaolin Style!

4. Ice Cube and Geto Boyz – I would not want to see Willy D after too much Ides.

3. Dr. Dre – I love the St. Ides Hoopty

2. Tupac and Snoop – Blueberry St. Ides!

1. Biggie For St. Ides – I think I’ll crack one open in his honor when I see Notorious!

Welcome to everyone’s a dj’s first post in a year! To start the new year off right I decided to kick it off with the worst music I have heard in the past year. It can only go up from here…I think?

#10 Wall Street Rap

The wall street rap kicks off our list and is highly apropros in our current economic times. These people snorted several 401ks worth before making this video.

#9 Sports! From the Tim and Eric Awesome Show Good Job

This number 9 only comes in so low because it is a parody of bad music. That said it is a masterful recreation of what people can and did do with the advent of the midi machine and the video camera. And, um, make-up.

#8 David Hasselhoff – Hooked on a feeling

Here, David Hasselhoff is hooked on a feeling. And a green screen.

#7 Teen Witch Rap Scene – Top That!

Unfortunately this song will be topped for complete suckage. I’m not entirely sure how it’s possible but then again she’s a valley girl witch and can freestyle rap against her teenage crush. Anything is possible.

#6 Inga – She is from Sweden?

Her name is Inga she is from Sweden. :\

#5 T-Baby – It’s So Cold in the D

Even in the summer, it is cold in the D.

#4 Iron Mic: Eli Porter vs. Envy

I feel bad for Eli here because he is clearly handicapped from the start. Then again, when you come to the rap battle you have to come correct. Despite his handicap I think Eli won for calling at least one of the dudes gay, which was pretty observant of him.

#3 Reh dog – Why Must I Cry

This music video is about a man whom befriended a fatherless ghetto boy. The boy stole from him time and time again. This video also speaks of a man who fathered twins with a woman he felt no love for. This song is highly emotional and it’s not about how well the singer is it’s about expression of hard times.

#2 Black out Band – Just Want to Play Video Games

I don’t mean to beat up on pre-teens but they assaulted my ears first. The worst part about this song is that is terribly catchy. It’s got a great hook and the kid’s voice is infectious. Like an open sore.

#1 Brokencyde – Freaxxx (Official Video)

A little bit techno, a little bit metal, all terrible. Probably the worst thing I have ever heard. Look out for when they all pour their drinks for the homies who are no longer with them.

So that’s it. That’s my top ten. I could probably find worse but I made this post in about 2 hours. I hope you laughed and cried as I have listening to these things.

Happy 2009!
